Upper Elementary 9-12

In Upper Elementary, it’s not unusual for a student to have one foot still in Lower Elementary while the other stretches for Middle School. Our curriculum is designed as a bridge between the two where each individual’s social, intellectual and emotional skill level is respected as they seek to know not only “what” but “how” and “why.”

As students begin their transition into adolescence they explore moral and ethical ideas as they seek to identify what makes them unique. The Upper Elementary Curriculum expands upon the foundation of skills learned in Lower Elementary providing students with the academic, social and cultural skills needed for Middle School and beyond, while encouraging independent learning, organizational skills and continued self-awareness.

Carefully guided by Montessori teachers, academic subjects are presented both individually and in small, multi-age groups. The curriculum is organized into integrated studies rather than a traditional subject-by-subject model often followed in most school systems.

With a focus on developing research and study skills, the core Elementary curriculum includes mathematics, language arts, cultural studies (history and geography), and science. Specialty teachers integrate art, technology/media resources, Spanish, music and physical education into general themes and studies in class.

Those who are academically gifted can soar, while those who need more repetition get it in various ways which interest them. All children’s different learning styles are nurtured. Kinesthetic, auditory and visual methods are easily integrated into the presentation of the curriculum. Abstract concepts become simply understood through ingenious manipulative learning tools.
