Primary Program 3-6
Maria Montessori described the 3-6 year old stage in life like that of a sponge, soaking in knowledge from all of their senses. Taking advantage of this learning period, children explore the four core curriculum areas: practical life, sensorial, math and language. Music, art, reading time, physical education and cultural subjects are also introduced to the class and every day includes recess and a snack. All of the classroom activities are designed to nurture self-confidence, concentration, working with others and independence.
Beyond academics, we teach children how to problem solve conflicts, how to act politely to their peers and adults, and how to be kind and helpful to their friends. Children are also given special jobs in the classroom to help them develop a feeling of leadership and accomplishment. The structure of the class and curriculum are designed to support the children’s social nature. Collaboration, self-confidence, public speaking, leadership, empathy for others and a sense of belonging are all skills developed during this timeframe.
In the classroom, the younger children focus on activities centered on “Practical Life.” He children learn to wash their hands, manipulate buttons and tie strings, sweep and bake. Preschooler’s are introduced to sensorial materials that help them learn through their visual auditory and tactile senses. Vocabulary sound games, songs and dancing are also used to teach during group activities.
As children progress, they are introduced to sounds and letters which lay the foundation for reading and writing. Children also begin to work with numbers and fractions using Montessori Materials to aid in their understanding and mastery. Geography, water forms, geometric figures, countries of the world and the part of plants and animals are also introduced to nurture the love of learning and build an awareness of the world around them. Music, art and foreign languages are also introduced to supplement the learning process.
In the third year (kindergarten) everything comes together for the child. Reading and writing and mathematical understanding begin to blossom from the many experiences of the previous two years. The child leaves the 3-6 program with a strong set of academic skills and a love of learning.
