The Montessori Center of South Dayton, Inc. (MCSD) is a private, nonprofit Montessori school devoted to offering a Montessori education to children between the ages of three and nine (pre-K through 3rd grade). MCSD traces its roots to 1964, when it rented space in the Horace Mann School in Dayton and was known as the Montessori School of South Dayton. In 1967, its own facility was built in Kettering. As the school grew, we rented additional space from the United Church of Christ on Bigger Road in Kettering. We again outgrew that space, and in 1988, moved to our current location within the Kettering Educational Arts Center at 2900 Acosta Street in Kettering, and became the Montessori Center of South Dayton, Inc.
Our student population represents the greater Dayton area. Our diversity is both cultural and geographic among the students and the staff. This diversity adds to the richness of the Montessori experience.
The Bison, our school mascot, represents strength, life, a proud heritage, and community.
Our belief in the “Freedom to learn and Power to lead,” reflects the Montessori philosophy as well as core goals of achievement we have for our students.
Continuing the school’s proud legacy and building upon the already positive reputation in the community are Toby and Tim Meixner, the new directors effective July 1, 2008. Toby began her career with the school in 1999, and continues teaching in her regular classroom. Tim holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and is in the dissertation phase of a PhD in Organizational Management.
All of our teachers have college degrees and are certified by either the American Montessori Society or the Association Montessori Internationale. The assistants are trained in the Montessori Method. Our staff members have over 100 years of combined teaching experience and a diverse background of educational experiences.
All teachers and child care personnel are certified in First Aid, CPR, Communicable Disease, and Child Abuse recognition.
Our students learn to contribute to the larger community through various service projects such as collecting non-perishable food items for the Miami Valley Holiday Aid food drive, visiting local nursing homes to share the joy of music with their residents, collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, recycling plastic bags, office paper, computer laser and ink cartridges and supporting Rainforest Conservation as members of the Nature Conservancy.
